A superior set!
Originally The Holy Land was intended to be in 2 volumes, hence many early issues had only two title-page vignettes. As is usual with lithographs, earlier impressions are considered the best and hence more desirable. This copy, an early set, was originally without the 3rd volume title vignette but now has this extremely rare subscriber copy inserted as a loose leaf to the final volume. Most sets (if you are lucky enough to find one even in fairly good condition) normally have at least one title vignette missing or the map in the back. This copy contains every plate in addition to the end map. Moreover, several of the plates have been archivally cleaned, rendering this particular set as near-perfect as is possible
to obtain.
A word about the binding. The Holy Land and Egypt & Nubia were originally not issued as complete volumes but sent out in parts over several years to subscribers. The recipients were obliged to bind the volumes themselves, hence there exist several different styles and colours of the bound volumes (later, bound sets were available in the publisher’s showroom at Threadneedle Street along with unbound parts).
The set offered here was done in a deluxe binding, the most expensive available at the time. Gilt, normally found only on the front and back covers and spine, is here also applied along all edges of the covers as well. In addition, the card edges, ordinarily gilded, are further adorned here with a geometric impression.
